<span class=\"hvr\">atomic<\/span><span class=\"hvr\">arrangement<\/span> is <span class=\"hvr\">such<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">that<\/span> in <span class=\"hvr\">each<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">direction<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">through<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">crystal<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">crystal<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">presents<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">same<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">optical<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">appearance.<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">atoms<\/span>in <span class=\"hvr\">anisotropic<\/span><strong> <span class=\"hvr\">crystals<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"hvr\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">closer<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">together<\/span> in <span class=\"hvr\">some<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">planes<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">through<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">material<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">than<\/span> in <span class=\"hvr\">others.<\/span> In <span class=\"hvr\">anisotropic<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">crystals<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span><span class=\"hvr\">optical<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">characteristics<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">different<\/span> in <span class=\"hvr\">different<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">directions.<\/span> In <span class=\"hvr\">classical<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">physics<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">progress<\/span> of an <span class=\"hvr\">electromagnetic<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">wave<\/span><span class=\"hvr\">through<\/span> a <span class=\"hvr\">material<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">involves<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">periodic<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">displacement<\/span> of <span class=\"hvr\">electrons.<\/span> In <span class=\"hvr\">anisotropic<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">substances<\/span> <span class=\"hvr\">the<\/span> <span
