What are Plastic Scintillation Arrays?

Plastic scintillators are solid solutions of luminophores (or luminescent additives, which are the active ingredients that produce visible light when radiation hits them) in a transparent polystyrene (PST) plastic base ( which holds the luminophores). Plastic scintillators have the features of a fast response time, making them excellent for high-speed measurement. Also, plastic scintillators are lightweight and low cost; the light output of plastic scintillators is not as high as NaI(Tl), but sufficient for certain applications.

Plastic scintillation arrays are assemblies of multiple plastic scintillator elements arranged in a grid or matrix. Each separate scintillator unit (called a pixel) in the array emits light when it interacts with ionizing radiation (such as gamma rays, beta particles, or neutrons) and offers spatial discrimination of the signals. Plastic scintillator arrays are especially useful for detecting radiation when spatial resolution or position-sensitive detection is important.

What are Plastic Scintillator Fiber (PSF) Arrays?

Plastic scintillator fibers (PSF) are thin, flexible optical fibers made from plastic scintillator material. A plastic scintillation fiber consists of a core made of plastic scintillator material doped with luminophores, the core is where the scintillation (light emission) happens; and cladding made of materials with a lower refractive index that surrounds the core, the cladding ensures total internal reflection, guiding the emitted light along the fiber toward a detector.

Plastic scintillator fiber arrays are structured arrangements of scintillating fibers. Each fiber acts as a miniature, individual light guide, and the entire array can provide detailed information on the position, timing, and intensity of incoming radiation.

What does Shalom EO offer?

Hangzhou Shalom EO provides SPA101 series plastic scintillator arrays and SFA100 series plastic scintillator fiber arrays.

Shalom EO’s SPA101 plastic scintillator arrays are custom plastic scintillator arrays developed based on our SP101 plastic scintillator, which is equivalent to EJ212 and BC400, optimized for the detection of gamma-rays, x-rays, and muons. Our flexible production capabilities allow the customization of the product specifications, including the number of scintillator pixel units, where the minimum pixel size is down to 3x3 mm, and the minimum distance between adjacent pixels is 0.5mm. About the thickness, when a single pixel is smaller than 6x6 mm, the thickness is typically between 2mm and 5mm; beyond this limit, it is not easy to realize.

Shalom EO’s SFA100 plastic scintillator fiber arrays are custom plastic scintillator products composed of plastic scintillation fibers. The plastic scintillator fiber array can be constructed by any numbers of scintillator units according to the user’s request, where the pixel size is down to diameter 0.25mm and up to 1mm, with the spacing between scintillation fibers typically being 0.5mm. The thinnest thickness for the plastic scintillator fiber is 10mm. About the finishing, the end faces of the scintillator fibers are all flat and mirror polished.
