Properties and Parameters of TGG Crystals
Product Name: Terbium Gallium Garnet Crystal (TGG)
Material: Crystalline material (mainly composed of approximately 46.86% terbium, approximately 34.26% gallium, and approximately 18.87% oxygen).
I. Product Introduction:
TGG crystal,or (Terbium Gallium Garnet) is a single-crystal material with excellent magneto-optical properties, widely used in various optoelectronic devices, especially Faraday rotators and optical isolators. TGG crystal possesses high toughness, high optical quality, a wide transparency range, and excellent temperature stability, making it one of the most commonly used magneto-optical crystals in the operating wavelength range of 400 nm to 1100 nm.
This product is manufactured using crystal growth technology, and undergoes directional cutting and high-precision end-face polishing. The crystal orientation is [111], and the surface dimensions are customized according to customer requirements. Both ends are optically polished and parallelized, with a wavefront error better than λ/4. The standard product is uncoated, but coating services can be provided according to customer needs.
II. Working Principle:
TGG crystals exhibit optical rotation (Faraday effect) on polarized light under the influence of a magnetic field, with the rotation angle proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field and the crystal length. This property makes TGG an indispensable magneto-optical material in laser systems, used to construct optical isolators to prevent laser reflection from damaging the system. Its high Verdet constant ensures that the required rotation angle can be achieved with a relatively small volume, and it also possesses excellent thermal stability and low absorption loss.
III. Production Process:
1. Crystal growth: TGG crystals are grown using a high-temperature melting method to ensure the integrity of the material structure and chemical homogeneity.
2. Oriented cutting: Oriented cutting is performed according to the [111] crystal orientation to obtain the best magneto-optical performance.
3. Precision machining: This includes end face parallel processing, fine grinding, and optical-grade polishing to ensure surface accuracy and smoothness.
4. Testing and Packaging: After rigorous optical wavefront testing (better than λ/4), the product is packaged in a dust-free environment, with optional coating treatment.
IV. Application Areas:
• Isolators for fiber lasers
• Faraday rotator
• Optical modulator
• High-power laser protection
• Scientific laser experimental equipment
