Thallium doped cesium iodide (or CsI(Tl)) is one of the brightest scintillators with a fluorescence spectrum up to 550nm, which allows using photodiodes for the detection of the emission. Because a scintillator-photodiode pair can be used, it is possible to reduce to a significant extent the size of the detection system, do it without high-voltage power supplies, and use the detection system in magnetic fields. CsI(Tl) has a high effective atomic number and consequently larger cross-section of the gamma-radiation photoabsorption.
CsI(Tl) has very good stopping power, is slightly hygroscopic, and with good plastic mechanical properties. Combined with relatively good radiation hardness properties, CsI(Tl) is also well suited for High Energy Physics. It is used in Phoswiches detector (phosphor sandwich) for whole-body counting and X-radiation astronomies as the "guard crystal" with, often a thin NaI(Tl) as the primary detector. Depending on growth conditions CsI(Tl) crystals can be obtained with low afterglow for application in tomographic applications.
Hangzhou Shalom EO provides 1-dimensional or 2-dimensional CsI(Tl) pixellated arrays ideal for the X-radiation scanning systems for medical and security applications. Photodiodes can be also assembled with CsI(Tl) array if it is required.
